A touch of old glamour in Palm Springs

We had such high expectations when we went to Palm Springs that it was quite possible we’d feel let down. It’s not that we’re hard to please, but we’d built up a somewhat cinematic image in our minds of how our visit to this desert oasis would play out.

Picture it: slo-mo and soft focus with a Lana Del Rey soundtrack; old glamour and cool retro architecture as we went from chic poolside sunbathing, to fire pits at sunset and cocktails after dark.

After driving for 3 hours from Las Vegas through the Joshua Tree National Park to Palm Springs in our rented convertible yellow Camaro and after an uninspiring visit to Vegas, we really needed Palm Springs reality to live up at least part of our desert dream.

L’Horizon Hotel and Spa delivered exactly what we’d been fantasising about; from before we’d even switched the engine off, we were greeted by the charming and disarming RJ who got us a drink and helped us settle-in; perfect service and just what we needed!

Originally designed in 1952 as a private family getaway, this collection of 20 bungalows set around a triangular pool has played host to Marilyn Monroe and Presidents Regan and Nixon to name a few. Redeveloped as a luxury resort, this adults-only luxury escape is both intimate whilst also epic as it sits in front of its dramatic mountain backdrop.

Inside, the bungalows are styled to maintain the resort’s mid-century modern architectural and design roots, with secluded patios and outdoor showers all finished with quality fittings and touches.

Sitting at the poolside bar having cocktails and nibbles while the cool mist machines kept us cool, we agreed we both felt like we were living in a movie or a music video.

Daytimes in L’Horizon’s poolside cabanas are chilled. Try their special giant pancake! Fluffy in the middle and ever-so-slightly crunchy around the edge, it was the best pancake we had on our trip to the US.

As the sun sets on Palm Springs, there’s mix of sexy, sultry cinematic glamour that envelopes L’Horizon, the like of which we’ve genuinely not experienced anywhere else.

And we can’t finish without mentioning the staff. Every single member of the L’Horizon team with whom we interacted excelled. Notable mentions go to the front-of-house staff, the poolside bar team and of course the delightful RJ; a brilliant team who elevate an already magical experience.

Prices for a deluxe poolview king bungalow start at $680 per night. lhorizonpalmsprings.com
